Budapest is one of Europe’s vibrant cultural centers with numerous historic, architectural and gastronomic attractions.
In travel brochures and on the Internet, Budapest is ranked as one of the world’s ten most popular destinations. About two million tourists visit the city every year. The city has a fascinating history, which is mirrored by its lively and charming architecture.
During your stay, you it is mandatory to sample the fine Hungarian wines and the special local brandies. The same goes for visiting old-fashioned cafés and restaurants.

Facts about Hungary and Budapest

The republic of Hungary lies exactly in the middle of Europe. Its area is approximately 93.000 km2 (which is about one third of Norway), and it is populated by about 10.2 million people. The national language is Hungarian – it is part of the same language group as Finnish, and it is different from practically all other languages in the world.
Hungary operates under CET (Central European Time), same as Norway.
The Hungarian international telephone code is +36 or 0036. When you wish to call a Norwegian phone number from Hungary, you must always dial the Norwegian country code, which is +47 or 0047 before you dial the rest of the phone number.

The currency is Hungarian Forint (HUF). 1 Norwegian crown is equal to about 35 HUF.

The prices in Hungary are relatively low compared to those in Western Europe, and especially compared to Norwegian prices. All the usual debit and credit cards are accepted at most places. You can withdraw cash from the ATMs, exchange money at the bank, or at the exchange office at the airport or at most shopping centers.
It is customary to give a 5-10 % tip if you are satisfied with the service. Please note, that at some places the service fee is included in the overall price.

The public transportation in Budapest is very efficient. Subway, tramlines and bus lines cover all the city, so you can easily get anywhere in the capital, and have swift access to all its noteworthy sights and the different Bellanor programs.
Budapest Card

We would like to call your attention to the fact that there is a Budapest Card that can be used as a method of payment on public transportation, and which also gives you a discount on entrance tickets to museums and other sights. The card exists in two varieties: 48 hour validity, or 72 hour validity. The card can be purchased at Bellanor, at metro stations, at tourist offices, at hotels or at the airport.

Shopping in Budapest offers great deals for women. The city has many modern shopping centers where you can find both local products and international brands represented. Budapest Fashion Street in the center has recently been renovated and has many new shops to offer where you can find the trendiest and most popular brands. In the same area there are also many cosy cafés where you can relax during your shopping tour.

Prisnivået i Ungarn er relativt lavt sammenlignet med Vest-Europa og spesielt sammenlignet med norske priser. Alle vanlige debit- og kredittkort aksepteres på de fleste stedene. Du kan ta ut kontanter fra minibanker (bankomats) eller du kan veksle penger i bankene eller i vekslingskontorene på flyplassen og i de fleste kjøpesentrene.

Det er normalt å gi 5-10% tips hvis du er tilfreds med servicen. Vær oppmerksom på at i noen restauranter er serviceavgift inkludert i totalprisen.

Offentlig transport i Budapest er meget god. T-banen, trikk og busslinjer dekker hele byen så det er lett å nå alle severdigheter og steder i Bellanorprogrammet.

Det er billig å kjøre taxi i Budapest. Vanligvis tar ikke taxiene kredittkort så det beste er å ha kontanter.
